Foods Dogs Should Never Eat

Here’s a list of foods that are harmful or potentially dangerous for dogs and should never be given to them:

Foods Dogs Should Never Eat

Chocolate

  • Reason: Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and can cause serious health issues, including heart problems and nervous system damage.

Onions and Garlic

  • Reason: These can destroy a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. Both raw and cooked forms are harmful.

Grapes and Raisins

  • Reason: These can cause kidney failure in dogs. Even small amounts can be dangerous.

Alcohol

  •  Reason: Alcohol affects dogs’ central nervous systems and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, coma, and even death.

Caffeine

  • Reason: Found in coffee, tea, and energy drinks, caffeine is harmful to dogs and can cause hyperactivity, rapid heart rate, and seizures.

Xylitol

  • Reason: This artificial sweetener, found in sugar-free gum, candy, and baked goods, can cause a rapid insulin release in dogs, leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and potentially liver failure.

Avocado

  • Reason: Avocados contain persin, a substance toxic to dogs that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Macadamia Nuts

  • Reason: These nuts can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs. Even small amounts can be dangerous.

Bones (especially chicken and fish bones)

  • Reason: These can splinter and cause choking or damage to the digestive tract.

Raw Dough

  • Reason: The yeast in raw dough can expand in the dog’s stomach, causing painful bloating. The fermentation process also produces alcohol, which is toxic to dogs.

Raw Meat, Fish, and Eggs

  • Reason: These can contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella or Listeria and may also lead to vitamin B1 deficiency.

Milk and Dairy Products

  •  Reason: Many dogs are lactose intolerant, and consuming dairy can cause diarrhea or digestive upset.

<Additional Precautions>

Foods High in Salt

  •  Excessive salt intake can lead to sodium poisoning, causing vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and potentially death.

High-Fat Foods

  • These can trigger pancreatitis, a potentially life-threatening condition in dogs.

Avoiding these foods is crucial to keeping your dog healthy and safe.  If your dog accidentally ingests any of these harmful foods, contact your veterinarian immediately.
